The area is used for walking and horse riding and cycling. Be courteous towards other users you do encounter, especially those with dogs and horse riders – our future use of these areas depends on this.
Travel to the event Come to the Event Centre, at the west end of Chantry Wood (What3Words
///tend.jumps.slime).
You can take the train - there are two stations in Guildford, but a not insignificant walk.
There are buses.
If you are driving, be aware that the A281 (Shalford Road) will be closed from 10:45 to 11:15 on Sunday morning, south of Pilgrim's Way (I assume in Shalford).
If you come by bike there should be room for you to leave your bicycle near the portaloos (preferably locked).
There will be a small tent in which you can leave your belongings. Use a distinctive bag as it is likely to become a 'heap' of stuff.
Car parking is up to you - but NOT in the small Chantries car park
Do not park in the small car park near the Event Centre, which shall be kept clear for non-orienteers to use.
We would discourage parking along Pilgrim's Way and Echo Pit Road as these are a busy through route. There is ample space on Chantry View Road, Clifford Manor Road and Tilehouse Road in limited parking bays (which are unlimited on Sundays) and on single yellow lines (again not applicable on Sundays) - these are all within easy walking distance of the event. Please park considerately, these are residential streets, and ideally I suggest we try to park on only one side of the road to avoid chicanes.
Dogs
Dogs allowed under control in the Assembly area but not on the courses please.
What is at the event centre/assembly area
The Enquiries/Dibber hire/Download tent is the 'event centre'. It has a car key drop and First Aid facilities. It also offers cash Entry On the Day until 11am if there are any maps available to sell. Online entry at Racesignup will continue to be available till 11am.
Nearby are portaloos, as well as the Finish for all courses.
Planner's notes
The Chantries and St Martha’s Hill lie adjacent on east/west walking routes; the more ancient Pilgrims Way skirts them but the North Downs Way enjoys a view of the Weald from St Martha’s church at the high point. They both form significant lumps of sandy, pebbly land, which is reflected in the height gains on all courses. The Very Short Green is planned to avoid the steepest parts. There is plenty of clear “white” forest, but expect the usual variety of runnability in partially shaded areas: the “undergrowth, walk, good visibility” symbol mostly describes bramble varying up to impenetrable. The dying bracken is not mapped: it may still present some hindrance on Blue and Brown courses. There is a good network of mapped paths, but additional vague and temporary ones come and go.
All courses explore the Chantries. Blue and Brown extend into St Martha’s.
Maps
Maps are A4 at a scale of 1:7500 with contours at 5m intervals.
Special symbol: a black X on the map represents a hide.
Brown and Blue courses start with a one sided map (Part 1); then at a map exchange point you pick up a double sided map for Part 2 and flip it over for Part 3.
Warm-up area
You can warm up on the track heading to the Start.
Start and Finish
The Start is a 400 metre walk from the event centre. From the Finish it is about 40 metres to Download.
Start times are not fixed (punching start)
You will have chosen a start time. To avoid bottlenecks at the Start please arrive there for the time you have chosen, but once there we will start you on a first-come-first-served basis. Listed start times will not be checked.
The event is on Remembrance Sunday. We shall cease activity at the Start just before 11 o'clock and resume after the 2-minute silence at 11.
All must punch the Start, including SIAC (contactless) dibbers. All other controls (except the Finish) are enabled for SIAC 'swiping'. It is your responsibility to check your SI card has registered at each control. In case of SI failure use the pin-punch on the control stake to mark your map in one of the R(eserve) boxes.
Take care of your hired dibber. It will cost you £69 for us to replace a SIAC if lost (or £20 for a normal one).
Courses summary information Note the 3 maps for Brown and Blue are presented as Part 1 on one sheet (from Start to map exchange) then Parts 2 and 3 back to back on a second sheet (from map exchange to Finish).
At the Finish
All must punch the Finish, including SIAC (contactless) dibbers.
Download promptly even if you have not completed the course.
Maps will NOT be collected. Please keep to the spirit of the event by not showing your map to those competitors who have yet to start.
Courses close at 2:30pm. By which time you must have downloaded to avoid us sending out a search party for you.
Final results will be on the Guildford Orienteers website after the event.
Medical conditions If you have an existing Medical Condition of which the Organisers should be aware, please complete a Medical Form which can be downloaded from the
British Orienteering website and hand in at Download/Enquiries in a sealed envelope marked with your name and "Confidential Medical Form for GO 08/11/26 event only". This will be opened only if you require medical treatment and are not conscious. It will be destroyed at the end of the event.
There are no longer any formal restrictions around Covid-19. However we encourage you not to attend if you or a member of your household has Covid-19 symptoms.
Ash dieback
BO recommends you arrive with all kit, especially footwear, fully cleaned since its last outing; after your run, put all your kit in a plastic bag to prevent spreading fungal spores.
SAFETY
Dress appropriately for the expected weather, bearing in mind that in the event of an accident you may be stationary for a few hours. Full cover leg protection is required. There may be ticks – please check yourself carefully after the race. Note that in bad weather cagoules may be made compulsory.
If you are travelling on your own so there is no-one checking that you complete your course it is recommended that you leave your car keys (or something else you won't forget to collect) in the car key box at Enquiries, with your name attached. So if you somehow slip through the net of our safety checks we still have an indication if you are missing at the end of the event.
It is strongly recommended that you carry a whistle. To attract attention in case of an emergency.
Safety bearing if you get lost is to head west and north (without leaving the woods).
Maps are overprinted with an emergency phone number which can be used on the day to contact the Organiser for emergencies.
Nearest A&E is Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford. There is a map at Download. There is also First Aid at Download.
