This is a Local event offering something for all abilities including newcomers.

For newcomers: There is a 60-minute Score course. If you have not tried orienteering before or are new to orienteering, this is the course to enter. Help will be provided at the event if you want to come along and have a go.

For anyone else and the DEVON v QO fun competition: There are 3 standard courses (Short, Medium and Long). Each course has a time limit. The Short will be technically easier, with the Medium and Long being technically more difficult. On each course, there are bonus controls (worth extra points) that can be collected. The locations of these controls will be shown on map samples attached to some (not all) of the controls on your course. When you arrive at a control, please check it for a map sample. You must use map memory to remember the location of the control(s) if you wish to visit them. It is not compulsory to collect these bonus controls, but it is compulsory to visit all controls on the map given to you at the start.

When you find a map sample, please do not remove it. Pens are NOT allowed to mark your own map with the location of the control(s) - this is a chance to test your map memory! Once you have visited the extra control(s), you must continue on the original course.

For example, you arrive at control 4 which may have a map sample with two additional controls on. You now have a choice. You can decide to:
(a) visit one of these bonus controls and then continue to control 5 on your original course,
(b) visit both bonus controls and then continue to control 5 on your original course or
(c) decide not to visit the bonus controls and continue to control 5.
Please note map samples might feature on bonus controls as well.

Scoring:
Each mandatory control (marked on the map you get at the start) is worth 10 points.
Each ‘bonus’ control (found on map samples on some of the controls) is worth 15 points.
The time limits for each course are shown in the table below. For every minute, or part minute, you are over your course time limit, you will lose 5 points per minute, so don’t forget to keep track of your time, and ultimately decide whether you can visit the extra controls within the time limit.

For the inter-club competition between Devon and Quantock participants:
The competition will be calculated using points accumulated on the Short, Medium and Long courses only. For example, if on the Short course, there are 6 Devon Competitors and 5 QO competitors, all QO competitors would count towards the competition, but only the top 5 competitors from Devon would count. Once all participants are in, the scores will be translated into positions on each course, ie. the competitor who scored the most points (ensuring all mandatory controls have been visited) would be awarded 1 point, the next highest score would be 2 points and so on. For competitors who have matching scores, the position will be decided on who did it in the quickest time, for example, if 2 competitors both score 100 points, but competitor A did it in 1 hour and competitor B did it in 1hour and 1 minute, competitor A would receive 1 point and competitor B would receive 2 points.
Once this has been done for all 3 courses, the total position points will be added up for each Club, and the Club with the lowest score will win the competition.
