Courses White, Yellow, Orange, Light Green, Very Short Green, Short Green and the Score course, are mapped at 1:7500.
Courses Green, Short Blue and Blue are mapped at 1:10,000 on A4.
Courses Short Brown, Brown and Black are mapped at 1:10,000 on A3.
There are two non-ISOM 2017-2 symbols. One is a brown triangle representing a platform. The other is a black X representing a man-made object. The maps will show these symbols where relevant.
There are no legends on the maps, please collect one at the start if required.
There are two starts. The near start for White, Yellow, Orange and Light green courses is 900m + 25m climb from the School. The far start for Very short green, Short green, Green, Short blue, Blue, Short brown, Brown and Black courses is 1200m + 30m climb from the School. The walk to both starts is the same and is signed / taped, through the valley of the Kidbrooke Park Grade 2 listed grounds design attributed to Humphrey Repton.
A clothing dump is available on the edge of the School grounds before the forest (please bring a waterproof bag to put your warm clothing in).
The finish is in the vicinity of the starts.
There are no road crossings on route to the start.
Competitors should take care when crossing streams and marshy areas taking into account water flow and steepness of banks and consider route choice accordingly. There are some unmapped wooden bridges which may be slippery when wet and icy.
All courses except for White, Yellow, Orange and Light green have road crossings. Short Brown, Brown and Black courses will also have a timed out road crossing with max 90 secs for a busier road crossing. Running along this road is forbidden.
The map is based on a survey by Peel Land Surveys in February 2022. The map has been updated primarily for vegetation changes in October 2025. Magnetic North has been adjusted to 2025. There are a number of seasonal paths or animal tracks that are indistinct and / or may not appear on the map. Some of the smaller streams and linear marshes were dry during the summer, but this is unlikely to be the case on the date of the event.
Area - Typical Ashdown Forest; steep-sided streams and gullies in a mixture of woodland and open heathland. Drainage is generally poor so the ground will be quite wet after heavy rain and the streams will rise rapidly. The open heathland has been mown in some places which improves runnability.
Conduct
You must adhere to the British Orienteering Participant Code of Conduct.
