Getting Started

We are very pleased to see many entries from those of you new to orienteering. We have included a link to a short video on the racesignup page which we hope you will have had chance to view. Two further short (5 minute) videos are available on request to the Organiser which amplify that guidance.

There will be plenty of DFOK club members on hand to show you how best to use your electronic finger and assist in any other way so don't hesitate to ask any of us but here also are a few tips to consider.

The key to successful orienteering is always to hold your map in a way that it is orientated to north. Everything you see should then accord with your map. Please ask if you are unsure how to do this.

All controls (checkpoints) are on a feature that is marked on the map. Navigate to the right feature and the control will be there!

You need to visit the controls in the set order which is listed in a control description sheet which is on your map. You will see a two digit number against each control. These will be in the range 60 to 90. When you reach a control you will know if you are in the right place because it will have a number clearly visible on it and this should correspond to what is on your map. If it does not, check your compass and consider where you may have gone awry. If still in doubt it can sometimes be best to head back towards your last control and try again.

To complete a course successfully you need to have visited all the controls in a single complete sequence. If you register at a different control, this will be ignored. If you go 1,2,4 missing 3, go to 3 but then return to 4 and continue to get that complete sequence in order.

The controls on your map are joined by straight purple lines. Orienteering is about navigation and route choice, so you will be unlikely to want to follow the line (and doing so might take you through some very unpleasant terrain!).

You must report to the Enquiries area back in the car park even if you do not complete your course as we monitor the safe return of everyone and send out a search party in the unlikely event that it is necessary,

Start and Finish
Only one individual or group participating together will be allowed to start at each start minute interval. There are 14 allocated starts in each 15 minute start block. If you arrive early or miss your start block we have start slot gaps so will be able to accommodate you at an alternative time.

Follow the red and white tapes from the car park to the Start and also back from the Finish. There will be a helper at the Start to guide you through the start procedures and one at the Finish too. Ask them if you are unsure what to do when you get there

The courses close at 2pm. You must have reached the finish by then.

Electronic Punching
Contactless punching will be facilitated but it is a Punching Start and Finish.

Final details
Final Details and printable Control Descriptions will be available from the DFOK website Home Page in the week before the event

If you wish to compete together as a group, only one entry is needed (and hence one fee) but please add "+x" after the surname of the entrant so we know how many are expecting to participate in the group e.g. for a group of 4 the entry would be Surname +3.

The entry fee includes the cost of hiring an electronic finger for registering your presence at each control you visit

If you are unable to attend the event and notify the organiser by email no later than 9pm on the evening before the event, a full cash refund less a deduction for the small cost of the entry system will be processed for your benefit in the week after the event.

Juniors are able to become members of DFOK and British Orienteering for a single annual fee currently £5. One of several junior membership benefits presently offered by DFOK is free entry to any DFOK event and we have three further day-time events planned before the end of the current membership year on 31 December. Junior newcomers in particular may wish to consider whether joining DFOK as a member could be advantageous before entering for this event. A discount code providing a 100% fee reduction for juniors will then be provided for use when entering the event.

It saves us time if you enter via Racesignup but if you have any difficulty please email the Organiser and we will be in touch for the information we will need to enter you and any family/friends into the event.
