Nowton and Hardwick Regional Orienteering event

Sunday 8th January

Regional orienteering event incorporating ESSOL.
The first event of 2023 close to Bury St Edmunds. This is a colour coded event with a range of courses to suite all abilities and is part of the Essex and Suffolk Schools League (ESSOL).

The woodland areas of both Nowton Park and Hardwick Heath are very runnable at this time of year.

Short Green, Green, Blue and Brown courses involve crossing the urban housing estate in order to make use of both Nowton Park and Hardwick Heath. Under 16s are not permiitted to enter these courses.

Light Green, Orange, Yellow and White courses will be entirely within Nowton Park.

The stated length of the courses are the straight line distances between controls; you can expect to run at least 30% further than the quoted distances.

If you are new to orienteering and are unsure about which course to enter, do read our beginners' guide here. If in doubt please contact the organiser at entries@suffoc.co.uk. There will also be help and guidance available at the event.

Competitors aged under 16 on the day of the event are not allowed to enter Short Green, Green, Blue or Brown courses as they will involve unsupervised road crossings.

For juniors running as a pair on the White or Yellow course as part of ESSOL, pleae enter the name of the older junior on the entry form and add the name of the other runner in the space provided..You will be charged the junior entry fee.

If you are entering as a group please enter with the name of one adult and add the names of the other group members in the space provided and you will be charged the senior entry fee.

You can opt to purchase an extra map fo the course you have entered for £1.00

The controls will be set up for contactless punching. A limited number of SIAC hire chips will be available.

Map/Terrain details
Nowton Park is a large park with grassland, interesting patches of woodland and ponds. Hardwick Heath is a smaller park predominently grassland with scattered trees. The map combines Nowton Park with Hardwick Heath and includes part of a housing estate to provide some urban elements for the longer courses. The woodland in both parks is very runnable at this time of year.
Longer courses will have an A3 1:7500 map. shorter courses will use A4 1:7500 map.

Start
The start will be open from 10:30 until 12:15. Start times will not be allocated and you may have to wait for a slot before you are able to get going.
ESSOL rules state that pupils from the same school running the same course will need to ensure that they start at least 4 minutes apart.
Courses will close at 14:00.

Essex and Suffolk Schools Orienteering League (ESSOL)
The League is run by the Essex Stragglers Orienteering Society in conjunction with Suffolk Orienteering Club.
ESSOL events are open to all young people of Junior or Senior School or Sixth Form age. You can compete individually, represent a school, youth group or club or do both.
