Event Information

Welcome to the November Classic. There is a lot of information in the Final Details and much of it you will be familiar with from other orienteering events. Here is a summary of the key points we'd like you to be aware of:

  • The weather forecast is currently for a bright and breezy day with some chance of a shower. Although the competition area is relatively sheltered, if we need to because of extreme weather we will impose the wearing of cagoules. Please bring one with you just in case.
  • Please come to the event knowing your Course Number, Class and Start Time.
  • There have been a handful of changes to start times so please check your allocated start time shown below. Most changes are by just a few minutes.
  • Allow yourself good time to walk up to 10 mins to the Start. If you miss your allocated start time you may have to wait quite a while for a free start slot as some courses are heavily subscribed
  • During your run do not enter the out of bounds areas shown on the map
  • Take your litter home with you

We hope you have an enjoyable day in the New Forest.

In either case, the route to the Start/ Assembly field will at the end of the field, furthest from the vehicle entrance.

Course 100 for SHI M21E has a double-sided map. All other courses are single-sided.
Loose control descriptions will be available in the start lanes.
Map surveyed by Peel Land Surveys 2022. Map printing by BML.

Terrain
We are very fortunate to be using a completely new area for orienteering in the New Forest and have the facilities of the New Park New Forest Showground.
The surrounding woodland is subject to many environmental constraints and working closely with Forestry England we have achieved consent through Natural England for its use, including a part of the area which is a nature reserve.
The terrain is predominantly flat with areas of marsh and numerous ditches. Only major ditches are mapped. To the west there are areas of conifer plantation that can be rough underfoot. There are numerous areas of open very runnable forest typical of the New Forest. There are a plethora of Rootstocks and Hides in the area, these have not been mapped. Bracken and undergrowth have died back in recent weeks improving runnability.

Planner's Notes
The area is used by the general public for leisure, dog walking and cycling, please be aware and courteous to other forest users. All courses either cross or follow cycle routes, take care as cyclists may be travelling at speed.
All courses have a Taped route from the last control into the Finish in the Assembly area.
Hazards
Courses 11, Yellow and 12, White follow a Forest road used as a Cycle Track. Take care and run on the left side of the track.

There is a deep water course which flows through the Eastern side of the map. There are only 3 marked crossing points over this water course. Do not cross the water course anywhere other than over the marked crossing points. This area is a nature reserve. Please respect these instructions as it could impact on the use of the area in future.
Road Crossings
Courses 100, 1, 2 and 3 all cross a minor road at least twice. There is No Time-Out for road crossings. The road has good visibility. Be aware of both cars and cyclists. Please do not run along the roads but cross as efficiently as possible.
Out of Bounds Areas
All courses follow a track through an OOB area near the beginning of the courses. Please stay on the path through the OOB area.
Courses, 100, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 all have a corridor route through an area of OOB to get to the Western side of the map and again on the way back. Please stay on the Track through the OOB section. The Track is also a Cycle Route, take care and be courteous to other track users.

Clothing and equipment
Full leg cover and footwear suitable for the terrain must be worn. Trail shoes or sturdy walking boots are recommended. Whistles must be carried. Whistles will be available at eTag Issue along with a charity box for The Army Benevolent Fund. Suggested donation £1.
The area is mostly sheltered and it is unlikely that competitors will be required to wear a cagoule or similar waterproof top, however these would certainly be recommended in the case of extreme weather conditions on the day. Please make sure you have a waterproof top with you just in case.

Timing System
EMIT eCard (Brikke) The charge for a lost hire card is £50.
Backup cards will be available from the Ecard issue point.

The Start Procedure
Start Call-up will be 5 minutes before your start time
You should make your way towards the start call-up at the North end of the assembly field via the signed route around the far edge of the field in good time for your call-up.
All competitors will have a punching start. Start times are allocated and you should make all efforts to be on time. If you don't you may have a long wait for a start slot on your course.
As you enter the start area your card will be read by an official with a hand-held reader and you will be asked to punch an “Activate control” to register that you are about to start. Please make sure your card punch registered. If not, please seek help from a start official.
Competitors on courses 11 and 12 (Yellow and White) courses should make themselves known to the start official at -4mins so they can be given their map.
Loose, waterproof control descriptions will be available at -3. A blank map will be available at -2. As you leave the start you must punch one of the START controls. Proceed to the labelled map boxes to pick up your map. Make sure you pick up the correct map for your course number.

On the Course
Give way at controls, be patient.
Safety Bearing

  • From the Eastern side of the area, head South East until you come to the open fields of the showground and then head towards the Finish in the assembly field.
  • From the Western side of the area, Follow the long straight gravel road which heads East from the middle of the car park on the minor road until you cross the middle of the large rough open area and cross a stream after the track turns left, then head SE until you come to the open fields of the showground and then head towards the Finish in the assembly field.
  • Competitors who become injured in the Western section and do not feel able to make it back to the assembly area should head to one of the car parks on the minor road and ask a member of the public to phone the emergency number on the map to request assistance.
