Part of the National (UKOL), South West and South Central Regional Orienteering Leagues

Southampton Orienteering Club (SOC) invite you to Long Beech, on Sunday 19th February 2023 in the heart of the New Forest

This is a SCOA and SWOA regional league event and is also part of the UK Orienteering League.

Please note that you may run up in the SCOA and SWOA leagues but you will not get points in the UKOL if you run up a class.

Brown 9.8km 180m climb
    Experience required.
UKOL Classes M21, M35, M40

Blue 6.8km 150m climb
    Experience required.
UKOL classes M16, M18, M20, M45, M50, M55, M60,
W21, W35, W40,

Green 4.8km 105m climb
    Experience required.
UKOL Classes M65,M70
W16, W18, W20, W45, W50, W55, W60

Short Green 3.6km 55m climb
    Experience required.
UKOL Classes M75, M80, M85, M90
W65, W70, W75,W80, W85, W90

Light Green 3.8km 75m climb
    Experience required.

Orange 3.5km 55m climb
    Mostly on paths, but corners can be cut. Suitable for improvers.
Classed as a Novice course.

Yellow 2.5km 45m climb
    All on paths. Classed as a novice course.

White 1.4km 35m climb
    All on paths. Suitable for beginners. Classed as a novice course.

Event Information

Location and parking
The event will take place on the Long Beech, Kings Garn Gutter and Salisbury Trench Inclosures in the New Forest.

Parking
Parking will be on the hardstanding areas of Ocknell Campsite at grid reference SU253120, W3W: wide.offstage.blazed. The event centre, including E-card pick, Enquiries and Download will be near the parking area. Competitors will need to cross the road to the Long beech Inclosure and follow the taped route 1.7 km approx to get to the Start.

Travel
Please car share wherever possible. You can sign up to the Car Sharing scheme - login to the event on Racesignup to join.

Facilities
There will be four portable toilets available at the event centre and one on Long Beech for helpers and emergencies only. Please use these rather than the forest, especially anywhere near the ranger's house.
Compass Point will be at the event centre for all your orienteering needs.

STOP PRESS: Tom's Food Wagon will also be at the event.

Please bring your own water to drink.

Courses close: 14.30

Road Crossings
There are no road crossings on any of the courses.
However you will need to cross a minor road to get to the Start.
Please make sure Juniors are accompanied when crossing.

First Aid and A&E
First Aid is available at the Finish.

The nearest A&E department is at Southampton General Hospital, SO16 6YD. The journey takes 20 minutes, 12.2 miles. Route cards will be available at Enquiries.

Timing System
EMIT card.
Hire cards can be collected from Enquiries / Download.
Please look after your hire card. Lost cards will be charged for at £50.00

Map
Scale 1:10,000, 5m contours, selected revisions in late 2022.

Control descriptions will be printed on the map. Loose control descriptions will be available at the Start. The White and Yellow courses have text control descriptions. All other courses have IOF control descriptions.

Terrain and Out of Bounds
Terrain is generally runnable forest with forest paths and rides. The area contains fenced inclosures and one steep-sided stream in the North however there are alternative easier crossing points nearby.

In the South the Coalmeer Gutter stream is out of bounds with one crossing place at a bridge.

Dogs
We are sorry but no dogs are allowed in the competition area.

Results
The results will be posted on the SOC website as soon as possible after the event.

SOC and Wessex Helpers
As this is a joint venture with Wessex Orienteers, we will need SOC and Wessex helpers for this event. If you are able to help, please contact Helen

for the helper code to claim a helper discount. Please also state if you have a preference for a particular volunteer job.
