Map/Terrain
Map:
Woodland (Yellow, Short Green, Junior Score): A4 1:4,000 .
Woodland & Urban (Senior Score & Green): A3 1:5,000
2.5m contours ; on waterproof paper. Woodland map updated for this event
The A3 map is bisected north-south by the B3080 – The Ridge – which, as its name suggests forms the high point of the area, with the land falling away to the west and east. The majority of the urban part of the map lies on the west of The Ridge, while the woodland area – Tinney’s Firs lies on the east side, in the southeastern corner of the map. Please note that whilst The Ridge is not a major road, cars can travel fast along it, so please take care when crossing. Courses have been designed so that you shouldn’t need to cross it more than once.
Woodland (Tinney’s Firs) – A4 map and SE corner of A3 map. It consists of ancient woodland with an extensive path network. Despite being a compact area, the terrain is surprisingly varied with some areas of runnable beech wood, other areas with large rhododendron and holly thickets. The eastern area features several small streams and ditches, while the western area has some interesting contour details.
Over the past couple of weeks, the bracken has sprung up rapidly, but the worst areas are mapped with the green undergrowth screen. There are many root stocks in the wood, only the major ones (>1.5m high) are shown on the map (green cross). There are a few hides (mapped with a black cross) and benches (black circle). Although it has been very dry recently most of the indistinct marsh areas shown on the map are still wet. They are all passable, but prepared to get wet feet if you decide to navigate through them!
Control Descriptions
Control descriptions can be picked up from the Start lanes; they are symbolic except for Yellow and Junior Score which will be text only.
They are also on the maps for all courses - except for the Senior Score course - please pick up loose control descriptions for this.

Notes on the score courses – both 1 hour
Senior Score Course: 36 controls with individual score values varying between 10 (19 controls), 20 (10 controls) and 30 (7 controls). The theoretical maximum score of 600 is split with 350 in the urban area, 250 in the woodland area. The urban area features longer legs with easy running and easy navigation, while the woodland area is compact with short legs and some slightly more challenging navigating (compass advised). The penalty for exceeding the 60-minute limit is 20 points per minute (or part thereof).
Junior Score Course: 24 controls with individual score values varying between 10 (10 controls), 20 (10 controls) and 30 (4 controls). The scores are designed to reward those prepared to get off the paths and get their compasses out.
For both Courses: the points values for the individual controls are included on the Control Descriptions. They can also be inferred fairly easily from the control numbers
