Event Information

Who is this series of coaching events for? Bring the whole family- no age restrictions!
This course consists four sessions on Saturdays in August. The course is for complete beginners or near beginners, who would like to learn how to orienteer. This course will take them from complete beginner to a level where they have the knowledge and skills to be able to take part in a proper orienteering event.
The course is aimed at individuals and families with children. Parents are responsible for their children at all times.

Session One, 3.08.24 at 14-15.30: Itchen Valley Country Park

Session Two,10.08.24 at 14-15.30: Itchen Valley Country Park

Session Three, 17.08.24 at 14-15.30: Royal Victoria Country Park

Session Four, 31.08.24 at 12.00-16.00 at Royal Victoria Country Park.

What Will I Learn?
Over the course of the first three sessions you will learn the following skills and be given the opportunity to practise them actively, you choose whether you walk or run!

The basic map symbols
How to set, fold and thumb an orienteering map
How and when to choose your route
Understanding contours
The use of the compass
Distance judgement including the use of pacing
The different types of orienteering event
How to prepare for an orienteering event

The final session will be an orienteering activity at Royal Victoria Country Park, which will allow you to practise your skills in a friendly and supportive environment. You will be given a discount code which will allow you to enter the event free of charge.

What should I bring?
Please wear clothing suited to the weather, preferably trousers with full leg cover and shoes or trainers suitable for walking/running. Please also bring water and suncream. You do not need to bring a compass and we will provide maps. If it is very hot we will make use of shaded areas as much as possible.

Who will provide the Coaching
The course will be led by a level 2 orienteering coach and Southampton Orienteering Club helpers. For further information about the club, please visit socweb.org.

Fees
The cost for the course is £8, juniors under the age of 18 are free but must be accompanied by a paying adult. Please note this is the cost for the whole course not just for one session. As each session builds on the previous it is hoped that participants will make a commitment to attending the whole course.
Please note the above fee does not include car parking charges at the country parks.
