Terrain
Most controls will be on the western area of of the map which consists of mainly open ground with a large number of gorse patches of various sizes. This region is is a reasonably steep slope that that leads down to to cliffs above the sea. There is a network of paths which mainly lead east-west so contour along the slope. Some controls will be located close to the road/gravel path network on the eastern side of the map.
There are a number of stone walls on the map and these MUST only be crossed at marked crossing points
At southern edge of the map cliffs drop steeply down into the sea. The only place you should ever get close to these is on a section of the coastal path that leads SW down from the castle , but there is a stone wall between that and the cliffs. Please do not approach the cliffs anywhere else on the map
There is an area around the Lighthouse that is marked Out of Bounds because in this region the coastal path runs very close to the cliffs with no wall or fence between them.

Safety and Admin
Orienteering is an adventure sport and so people taking part accept that there is some risk. From the start of 2026 people who are not members of British Orienteering will no longer be covered by their insurance policy
All competitors must carry a spare light source and a whistle. Competitors are also advised to carry a mobile phone .
Everybody MUST report to download after they finish otherwise a search party may be sent out to try and find them
The event is on a slope overlooking the English Channel and its open nature means it is very exposed to any wind and rain . If conditions dictate the organiser may insist cagoules are worn or carried by all competitors, though you might like to consider doing this anyway
If lost on the western section of the map head north up the slope until you find a path and then follow this east back towards the assembly area.
Cancellation will only be done as a last resort but if it does happen, Wessex Orienteering Club reserve the right to retain a portion of the entry fees to cover any expenditure that was already committed
