Location, travel and parking
The event centre is opposite Weston Parade public car park, Weston, near Netley, SO19 9JT:
Timing
Help, advice and SI Dibber hire: 10:00 - 12:00
Starts : 10:30 - 12:30
Courses close: 14:00
Start at any time but please make sure you have enough time to finish the course before course closure. If you have your own SI Dibber you may go straight to the start.
If you are hiring a SI dibber, this can be collected from the Enquiries/Download tent in the event centre.
From the event centre, there is a 300m walk to the start and 500m back from the finish.
Map and Terrain
1:7,500 map on waterproof paper, 5m contours.
Westwood is a nature reserve of ancient deciduous woods, rolling grasslands, and the remains of conduits that once fed water to the monastery at Netley Abbey. The orienteering courses will take you through the woodland path network, over the concrete foundations of a World War 2 artillery emplacement (now hidden in the undergrowth), and also out into the more open, runnable area in the eastern part of the park.
Facilities
Public toilets are available at the On The Water Cafe, 700m from the event centre. The Cafe sells hot and cold drinks, burgers, panini and ice creams.
Safety and Cancellation Procedure
Please be aware of the risk of ticks and Lyme disease.
Please do not pick up litter or unidentified objects in the competition area.
In the unlikely event of us needing to cancel the event due to poor weather, this will be communicated via the SOC website, socweb.org.
If you have driven to the event on your own, please leave your car keys at the Download tent.
Orienteering is a physically challenging sport. Participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety.
Dogs
Dogs are allowed at the event centre and on the courses. Dogs must be kept under control at all times. Please do not run with more than one dog and give priority to other runners at control sites. Dog owners are liable and responsible for any situations involving their dog.
Download
You must report to Download before you leave, even if you retire. This is so we know you are back and don't start searching the woods to find you!
