This year's Christmas Cracker Pant-O-Mime event carries on the tradition of our annual Panto frolicsome fun. (Oh no it doesn't!) Oh yes it does! - and it comes with (Local, level D) Orange, Green and Blue courses alongside if you're in a bit of a Grinch mood.

Fun Family Festive Frolics at Newlands Corner

The Pant-O is a mass start 45-minute score-orienteering challenge. There will be a panto mystery to crack, by collecting special control clues, which you will find easier if you swot up the names of the characters in the following pantomimes:
  • Treasure Island
  • Cinderella
  • Robin Hood
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • Aladdin

Individual entries, or teams of up to 4 people (maximum two M/W18+ in each team). Enter as individuals but register your team on the day (you can optionally let us know when you enter if you think you'll be teaming up). Give your team a panto-theme name and dress festively!

No dibbers required for the Pant-O but a pen and paper will be useful (and a watch).

    The colour-coded courses (start times from 10:30 till 11:30) require a dibber and are boring and normal {boo!} (Oh no they aren't!) {hooray!} And they are incorporating the SLOW club championships {hip hip hooray!!}

SLOW members should enter via your club captain.

Enter online here at Racesignup or come along and enter on the day (with cash).

Guildford Orienteers will be available to provide assistance, guidance and festive refreshments.

    Final Details

There is no managed parking, just use the public car park at Newlands Corner. But be aware that, particularly if it is a nice day, it may fill up. So the more people in each car the better!

Cafe and toilets are at the road entrance end of the car park.

    Mountain bikers coming through

Be aware: that there will be a long-distance mountain bike event coming through the Newlands Corner car park on Sunday (the Dirty Santa). They will already have done 30km so should be well spread out (and worn out?) and they will, like you, be considerate of the general public. Only the Blue course will cross their route, which also traverses St Martha's.

    There are two Starts

The Pant-O Start is only 50 metres from the GO tent for Dibber hire/Download/Food, which is at the far end of the car park. Do not walk back to the cafe towards the other Start.

    The 'main' Start
The Orange, Green and Blue courses Start from about 50m north of the cafe which is near the road (A25) end of the car park, past the toilet block. This is about 400m from the GO tent for Dibber hire/Download/Food.

    Course closing time
Courses close at 1:30pm. Please download (or report back if you are on PantO) by this time, so we don't send out search parties unnecessarily.

    Blue course runners

You will have a double sided map. Make sure you start on the right side (it's titled Newlands Corner). You turn over to the St Martha's map at control number 8, and then back to side 1 from control 21 to the Finish.

When you turn over the map you have 400m of path alongside the road - DO NOT run on the road. Note that the MTB event will be powering down the road and on to St Martha's where you initially share the same track for 20 metres or so. Take care.

Make sure you punch the controls at either end of the 400m path, in both directions, out and back.

    Rules for the PantO Score

    Individual or team entries
Individuals or teams can enter. A team has up to 4 people (maximum two M/W18+ in each team).

Teams to be confirmed/adjusted on the day (each team member is a separate entry to the event).

This event has a score format
This event requires you to visit as many controls as you can (in any order) within 45 minutes in order to solve some pantomime questions. You do not need to know the pantomime plots but knowing the names of the characters is pretty important. The team needs to find 3 characters for each pantomime.

Every team member gets a map and teams can stay together or split up in order to get more control visits in the allotted 45 minutes.

Teams: When you start and have your maps, you may want to discuss team strategy before setting off (separately or together).

When you have either completed the challenge, or run out of time, proceed to the Finish as a team, and write down your finish time (of your last finisher) from the event clock. You then collect an answer sheet, write in the numbers against each Pantomime, and hand in the sheet for it to be scored.

You will score 1 point for each correct character placement (maximum of 3 per Panto). You will have a point deducted for each minute or part minute over 45 minutes.

No dibber but watch and pen/paper very useful!
No dibbers are required for the PantO score, but you will want to have a watch and pen & paper (for each team member). The pen/paper is to write down answers as you go; the watch to help you get back in time.
